Those intimately involved with the Columbus Crew might not be the most unbiased to rank where the MLS Cup winners rank among the best in league history, but that doesn't stop them from having an opinion.

As Clark Hunt and members of the Hunt Sports Group walked through the stands of The Home Depot Center prior to the start of the MLS Cup, Crew fans chanted, "Re-sign Sigi."

Just 87 seconds after New York tied Sunday's MLS Cup Final at 1-1 at The Home Depot Center, Marshall scored his sixth goal of the season and it proved to be the game-winner, although Frankie Hejduk added a late insurance goal for a 3-1 Crew win.

Words didn't need to be spoken. A player and coach both exiled from Los Angeles had reunited in Columbus last season, and Sunday made a triumphant return to their site of past glory. The player, Alejandro Moreno, scored the game's first goal and was his usual workhorse for 90 minutes.

In the Columbus Crew's 3-1 MLS Cup-winning victory against the Red Bulls, playmaker Guillermo Barros Schelotto could be seen making contributions both big and small, and they all added up to his being named the Most Valuable Player of MLS Cup 2008.

Columbus Crew defender Frankie Hejduk spends most games careening up and down the right flank with reckless abandon. If Hejduk isn't defending in his own end, he streams up the sideline to overlap Eddie Gaven and fire in cross after cross.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto became the third player to win the MLS Most Valuable Player award and the MLS Cup MVP honors in the same year, after taking the honors during MLS Cup 2008.

If Sigi Schmid were a baseball manager -- Tommy Lasorda comes to mind -- he would've been able to copy the same lineup card with eight position players and just fill in the pitcher every day before handing it to the home plate umpire before the game.

When Eddie Gaven entered the league at 16 years old, he probably didn't anticipate that his first taste of MLS Cup would come against New York.

Columbus Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer is at his second MLS Cup but he said his first trip with Kansas City four years ago doesn't really count.

Two players who have had breakout seasons could be the difference makers for the Columbus Crew when they face New York for the MLS Cup Sunday at The Home Depot Center.

At the beginning of the season Steven Lenhart had no idea where MLS Cup 2008 was being played. A rookie out of NAIA school Azusa Pacific, the forward was just trying to work his way into an accessory role with the Columbus Crew.

With Guillermo Barros Schelotto scheming his way to the MLS Most Valuable Player award and Robbie Rogers and Eddie Gaven flying down the wings, Columbus Crew striker Alejandro Moreno sometimes gets lost in the shuffle.

Major League Soccer champions have come in all shapes and sizes, guided by the stingiest of defenses or by the most prodigious of attacks. The marquee men have sometimes been in-form strikers, brick-wall defenders or talented, determined goalkeepers.

Gino Padula doesn't see Sunday's MLS Cup against New York as a chance for payback on the one blemish to his season. The Argentinean defender, signed by the Crew on March 24, struggled through early injuries to appear in 17 regular and postseason matches.

The happiest person running around the sun-splashed practice fields at The Home Depot Center was Columbus Crew equipment manager Rusty Wummel. No longer would he have to spend a few more hours each day washing the cold-weather gear that Crew had donned for the better part of a week.

Statistics such as 19 assists -- tied for the second-most in league history -- and contributing to 10 consecutive goals are impressive, but what made Guillermo Barros Schelotto the 2008 MLS Volkswagen Most Valuable Player was his role off the field.

The third time was not a charm for Pat Noonan, so he's hoping for a better result with a different team. Noonan came oh-so close in the past three MLS Cups, and now he's back for a fourth straight try but this time it's with Columbus.

No matter the outcome of Sunday's MLS Cup in Carson, Calif., a player from the Columbus area will be on the winning side.

Prior to Thursday's 2-1 victory in the Eastern Conference Final, the last time the Columbus Crew had defeated the Chicago Fire in Crew Stadium was over the 4th of July weekend in 2004. Funny, that. Because in Crew Nation, November 13 is now Independence Day, for that is the day that Columbus Crew emancipated themselves from the suffocating tyranny of failures past.

Even though the Columbus Crew will leave behind many of their passionate supporters when they play for the MLS Cup Nov. 23 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, the trip to southern California will be like going home for many associated with the team.

Because the Columbus Crew were in familiar territory, trailing Chicago at halftime of the Eastern Conference Championship, they were able to record another stirring comeback to send the club to a place it has never been before.

Quick goals from Chad Marshall and Eddie Gaven early in the second half overcame a goal by Brian McBride and carried the Columbus Crew to a 2-1 Eastern Conference Championship victory Thursday against the Chicago Fire and the first MLS Cup berth in club history.

Shortly after the Crew booted the Kansas City Wizards from the 2008 playoffs, the Crew's longest-tenured vet, Duncan Oughton, couldn't help but smile.

Like the season series that resulted in two ties, Thursday's Eastern Conference Championship between the Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire appears to be even.

For the Eastern Conference Championship, the Crew will have to come back on a short week after finishing their semifinal series on Saturday. After back-to-back shutouts of New England in their semifinal series, the Fire feel they have regained their form.
