It doesn't exactly make up for a loss in the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, but the Houston Dynamo's 1-0 win against CD Luis Angel Firpo Wednesday night at Robertson Stadium will help ease the pain of what is sure to be a long winter.

The healing process is just underway, and the pain of the Dynamo's first-round elimination from the MLS Cup playoffs is still fresh. But rather than immediately begin an offseason filled with what-ifs, the Dynamo have the chance to get back on the field and play in one more meaningful match to close out the 2008 season when they host Salvadoran champion Luis Angel Firpo on Wednesday, November 26, in a must-win Champions League game.

When most teams are eliminated from the MLS Cup playoffs, redemption is hard to find. Preseason practices and next season's games remain months away, and players and fans are left to spend the offseason with a bitter taste in their mouths. For this year's Houston Dynamo, however, there is one last hurrah to the season.

The Houston Dynamo are unbelievably good when the level of competition is at its highest. There really isn't another way of describing the team that is three wins away from a third consecutive MLS title.

Eddie Robinson has heard all the clichés about home-field advantage, and he's quite willing to tell you they are absolutely true, at least when it comes to Robertson Stadium and Houston Dynamo fans.

Even without Kei Kamara's equalizer five minutes from full time, the Houston Dynamo were feeling pretty good. After all, in each of the last two seasons they trailed in the opening leg of the Western Conference Semifinal Series, only to eventually win the MLS Cup.

On Sunday morning, the Houston Dynamo reserves clinched the MLS Reserve Division title in Carson, Calif. In San Salvador Tuesday night, they were three minutes from becoming the first Major League Soccer team to win on the road in the CONCACAF Champions League.

The Houston Dynamo Reserves clinched the MLS Reserve Division title Sunday morning with a 3-0 win over Chivas USA. Houston finished with a 9-1-2 record, 29 points, and a better points-per-game average than Eastern Conference leader Kansas City (8-1-2).

The Houston Dynamo and Chivas USA exchanged second-half goals before the teams settled for a regular season-ending 1-1 draw Saturday at The Home Depot Center. Houston's Dwayne De Rosario scored on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, just after Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy was sent off, while Chivas USA's Jim Curtin knocked in a rebound in the 90th minute to help a 10-man Chivas USA squad salvage a point.

For the second consecutive year, Chivas USA and the Houston Dynamo meet as the top two teams in the Western Conference - though this year the roles are reversed, after the Dynamo finished atop the division for the first time in club history.

Wednesday's CONCACAF Champions League match against Pumas UNAM started more than 45 minutes late and the Houston Dynamo never caught up.
