Left for dead. That is what the Kansas City Wizards were on June 14, 11 games into their 2008 MLS season. But Kansas City would rise like the famed phoenix by season's end. And now, the club is pulsing, and the vital signs are good for the future.

The Missouri Development Finance Board (MDFB) approved tax credits last Thursday toward The Trails development in Southeast Kansas City, a project proposed by local real estate company LANE4 Property Group that would include a soccer-specific stadium for the Kansas City Wizards.

Delays are inevitable, but so is progress -- at least perhaps in the minds of the Kansas City Wizards. After months of delays, the final piece of financing for the Three Trails' development in southeast Kansas City that will include a soccer-specific stadium for the Wizards has been approved.

The Kansas City Wizards brain trust feels it is right on track after two seasons at the helm. Head coach Curt Onalfo and technical director Peter Vermes have guided the team to the MLS Cup Playoffs in both seasons and even pulled two more points out of the 2008 version than the 2007.

And in the first match of their Eastern Conference Semifinal Series, Leathers kept the dangerous and pacy left midfielder off the scoresheet in a 1-1 draw at Kansas City.

Symmetry ruled the Kansas City Wizards' away form this season. In their opening road game of the season, the Wizards beat Chicago 1-0 at Toyota Park. Kansas City didn't win again on the road until a 3-1 win at Gillette Stadium to close out the regular season.
